- It’s a Wonderful Life
We all need social capital, the human connections that lead to a more fulfilling life. For people with disabilities – and, indeed, all of us – building social capital requires time and space to connect and build trust, an effective means of communication, and an opportunity for genuine participation, not mere presence.
This session will offer insights on three essential elements for supporting people with disabilities in building social capital:
Allowing individuals to define their own quality of life measures,
Connecting people to supports in their local community, especially when resources are scarce, and
Organizational transformation from a model of traditional services to a model in which Medicaid dollars are repurposed to help build community connections.
This creates opportunities for persons served to move from being trainees to being employees, from being helpless to being self-determined, engaged members of their communities.
If you’re looking for information and resources that can lead to better outcomes for the people you serve, this is the session for you.
