DSP Leadership Teams: Leading from the Front Lines

September 11, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm
Eastern Daylight Time

Bethesda Lutheran Communities’ commitment to person-centered principles informs a broad spectrum of services that not only meet the needs of the people they support but the needs of their family members and their caregivers.

In this vein, Bethesda established its DSP Leadership Team (DSPLT) to leverage DSPs’ unique experiences and perspectives to offer agency leadership with recommendations on DSP recruitment and retention strategies.  The DSPLT promotes a collaborative relationship among DSPs, corporate, and regional staff; offers an organization-wide network for DSP peer support; and informs organization-wide discussions on ways to improve job satisfaction and engagement of this critical workforce.  Learn about the DSPLT’s goals, function, structure, accomplishments, challenges, and opportunities, as one approach to promote DSP engagement.

A recording will be made available for registrants.

Presenter(s)

Mark Hagen, Corporate Director of Public Policy, has directed public policy and advocacy efforts for Bethesda Lutheran Communities at the federal level and thirteen state Capitals since 1995 in addition to leading organizational efforts to train and engage self-advocates. Prior to joining Bethesda, Mark served for five years on the Congressional staff of former Rep. Jim Moody (D-WI5).

James Windle is a Direct Support Professional (DSP) for Bethesda Lutheran Communities supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Missouri for more than 16 years.  James was selected as an original member of the DSP Leadership Team in 2017 to provide DSPs across the organization a voice in expressing ideas, sharing successes, and fostering positive change.
