2019 Direct Support Professional Recognition Week Toolkit

DSP Recognition Week – September 8-14Direct Support Professional Recognition Week (September 8-14, 2019) is a great opportunity to highlight the dedicated, innovative direct support workforce that is the heart and soul of supports for people with disabilities. We hope that you will use this opportunity to highlight the important work of direct support professionals nationwide, but especially those in your life, whether they work for your agency, support you or a loved one, or simply work to make a difference in your community. Your celebrations of the DSPs at the heart of our field are part of a nationwide party we throw every year to showcase the amazing and often unsung work of these incredible professionals, and mark just a small fraction of the recognition that they deserve throughout the year.

To support your efforts to acknowledge DSPs, this toolkit offers ideas and resources you can use to say "thanks" and raise awareness about the role DSPs play in helping people with disabilities be part of the community. The toolkit includes a high-resolution version of the DSP Recognition Week 2019 logo (for use in or on any materials you see fit), customizable social media posts (for use in spreading the word), and links to our DSP Recognition Week Store. We can't wait to celebrate your DSPs with you!

Download the hi-resolution version of the logo with a transparent background. Use the logo in your marketing materials, on gifts you order in appreciation of DSPs and more. If you need help using this file or would like to request other versions of the logo, please contact [email protected].

Ideas for Recognizing DSPs Who are Making a Difference in Your Community

In the market for creative ideas for celebrating DSP Recognition Week? Here are five ideas to get the creative juices flowing!

  • Collect 30-second videos from the individuals you support, their family members, your other colleagues and more with messages about the difference your agency's DSPs are making in the lives of the people they support.
  • Put together a gift bag for each DSP at your agency that includes their favorite candy, a small gift card and one or two items from the DSP Recognition Week Store. Then, assemble a team to hand-deliver these gift bags to the places where your DSPs work.
  • Host a party for your agency's DSPs at a local park and encourage them to invite their friends, family members and loved ones for a day of fun in the sun.
  • Use deeply discounted tickets from MemberDeals (one of the many benefits of ANCOR membership) to plan an outing for your DSPs at the movies, to see a play or musical, or at the local amusement park.
  • Reach out to your mayor and ask that she or he issue a proclamation declaring September 8-14, 2019, as DSP Recognition Week in your city. Then, plan a signing ceremony where the mayor signs the proclamation and thanks each of your DSPs individually for the work they do to create a more inclusive community.

Submit a Story

ANCOR is partnering with CQL and NADSP in encouraging people receiving supports, provider organizations, and staff to recognize excellence direct support professionals! We are looking for stories about DSPs who are using CQL's Personal Outcome Measures® and/or NADSP's Code of Ethics/Competency Areas, to help people with disabilities achieve their personally-defined outcomes. If your DSPs story is selected, it will be shared across ANCOR, CQL and NADSP websites and social media pages. You will also be able to preview the story prior to it's published online.

To submit a story:

  • Complete this online survey explaining how the DSP has used the Personal Outcome Measures® and/or Code of Ethics / Competency Areas in their supports.
  • Record a video explaining how the DSP has used the Personal Outcome Measures® and/or Code of Ethics / Competency Areas in their supports and send it to [email protected].
